South Gate, Los Angeles County
South Gate takes its name from the south gate of the old Lugo family rancho and became a city in 1923. For half a century it was a factory town. General Motors assembled cars here from 1936 to 1982, and Firestone made tires at a plant on the boulevard that still bears its name. Their closings reshaped the local economy.
